This Year is When AI Becomes Real at Dialpad

Last year was the year of hype around AI; this year is the year AI becomes real, and next year and beyond is when the winners really start to monetize the AI.

“Last year was the year of hype around AI; this year is the year AI becomes real, and next year and beyond is when the winners really start to monetize the AI,” asserts Craig Walker, the co-founder and CEO of Dialpad. His words resonate in a world where the promise of AI is now becoming a tangible reality, particularly within the communications sector. Founded in 2011, Dialpad has emerged as a frontrunner in unified communications, leveraging artificial intelligence to transform how businesses connect and collaborate.

From Vision to Reality

Walker’s entrepreneurial journey began in 2001 with Dialpad Communications, a pioneering internet telephony service that eventually caught the eye of Yahoo, leading to its acquisition in 2005. After a stint at Yahoo, where he gained insights into the tech giant’s operational scale, he co-founded GrandCentral in 2006. This venture also drew attention from Google, resulting in a $50 million acquisition in 2007, which subsequently evolved into Google Voice.

Reflecting on his time at Google, Walker shared, “If you launch a product at Google, particularly a consumer product, it has to theoretically scale to be able to support 100 million users on Day One.” This experience was instrumental in shaping his vision for Dialpad, focusing on building scalable solutions that could meet the demands of modern businesses.

Brian Peterson is a co-founder and the Chief Technology Officer at Dialpad. Previously, he was a Senior Software Engineer at Google, where he played a pivotal role in developing the front end of Google Voice. With a robust background in technology and innovation, Peterson is instrumental in driving the company’s technological advancements and shaping its growth strategy.

In 2011, after serving as the first Entrepreneur-in-Residence at Google Ventures, Walker teamed up with Brian Peterson to establish Firespotter Labs. Their flagship product, UberConference, debuted at TechCrunch Disrupt in 2012, winning accolades for its innovative approach to conference calling. Shortly after, Walker acquired the Dialpad brand from Yahoo, rebranding the company to better reflect its ambitious mission in the communications landscape.

A Game Changer in Communication

Dialpad quickly distinguished itself by integrating AI capabilities into its core offerings. Today, the platform operates as an AI-powered customer intelligence system, featuring functionalities such as:

  • Real-time call transcription: Automatically captures conversations, ensuring critical details are documented.
  • AI-driven virtual agents: Enhances customer interactions and streamlines workflows.
  • Customer satisfaction (CSAT) scoring: Provides insights into customer experiences through interaction analysis.
  • Automated call summaries: Generates concise summaries of calls for better follow-up.
  • Real-time assistance for sales and support teams: Delivers instant guidance during customer interactions.

Craig Walker emphasizes the significance of AI, stating, “The secret sauce that ties all of that together is the artificial intelligence that is built into that core platform.” This commitment to innovation has positioned Dialpad at the forefront of a rapidly evolving market.

A Strong Trajectory

Dialpad’s growth has been remarkable, attracting substantial investments over the years. In December 2022, the company announced a significant $50 million investment aimed at AI research and development over five years. By October 2024, Dialpad had raised a total of $170 million in funding, achieving a notable valuation of $2.2 billion. This financial backing underscores the market’s confidence in Dialpad’s innovative approach and its potential for continued expansion.

Strategic AI Initiatives

Dialpad’s dedication to AI innovation is evident in several strategic initiatives:

  1. Dialpad Ai Labs: Launched to accelerate the development of AI features, driving exploration and innovation within the platform.
  2. DialpadGPT: A proprietary large language model designed for business conversations, powering features like Ai Recaps that enhance user experience with instant summaries and insights.
  3. 12 Months of Ai: A commitment to releasing new AI-powered features monthly, including Ai CSAT, Ai Scorecards, Ai Playbooks, and Ai Coaching Hub, showcasing Dialpad’s commitment to continuous improvement.
  4. Custom Ai Playbooks: Providing real-time coaching and adherence guidance to sales and customer service teams, enhancing performance and efficiency.

Dan O’Connell, Chief AI & Strategy Officer at Dialpad, highlights the importance of Custom Ai Playbooks, stating, “Custom Ai Playbooks for industry-specific LLMs is the future of tangible AI. It’s Dialpad’s version of an AI Copilot, a conversational interface built specifically to support users with rapid decision-making.”

Expanding the Ecosystem

Dialpad’s strategic partnerships have further solidified its market position. Notably, a collaboration with T-Mobile introduced AI-enabled features like Ai Recaps to business customers. This partnership proved fruitful, resulting in a 137% increase in channel partnerships, particularly in Australia and New Zealand in 2022. This growth not only reflects Dialpad’s expanding reach but also its commitment to delivering innovative solutions that meet the evolving needs of businesses.

Dialpad’s innovations have not gone unnoticed. The company was ranked #25 on the Forbes Cloud 100 list and recognized as one of Fast Company’s Most Innovative Companies in 2023. These accolades underline Dialpad’s commitment to excellence and its impact on the unified communications space.

A Recent Outage

Despite its success, Dialpad recently faced a widespread outage affecting users across the U.S., significantly disrupting business communications. The Boyer Agency confirmed that their telephone lines were down due to this system failure, raising concerns among Dialpad’s customers about potential operational disruptions. In response, Dialpad offered troubleshooting techniques and encouraged users to run system tests to assess network performance. They provided a customer care number for assistance, demonstrating their commitment to service during challenging times.

The outage highlighted the sensitivity of Dialpad’s VoIP service to network issues such as latency, jitter, and packet loss, which can impact call quality. As a proactive measure, Dialpad advised users to optimize their network configurations and make hardware adjustments to mitigate service disruptions.

The Road to Monetization

As Walker reflects on the future, he recognizes that the next phase is critical for businesses looking to harness AI effectively. “We are on the brink of something transformative,” he asserts, indicating a shift where practical applications of AI begin to materialize in day-to-day operations.

With the launch of Dialpad AI Lab, the company is committed to integrating AI across all aspects of its platform, enhancing productivity and customer satisfaction for businesses globally. The development of DialpadGPT, trained on over 6 billion minutes of real business conversations, is a standout achievement. This proprietary AI model powers features like Ai Recaps and live coaching, providing businesses with highly accurate and context-aware insights.

As businesses continue to explore the potential of AI, Dialpad’s journey exemplifies how a commitment to innovation can redefine communication and collaboration in the modern age. As Dialpad aptly puts it, “We’re transforming how the world works together.”
