Music AI Evolved from a Practice App to a $40 Million AI First Music Company

Unlike some AI companies facing legal battles for copyright infringement, Music AI ensures that its models are only trained on licensed content.

The relationship between technology and music has always been one of mutual inspiration, with both inspiring and magnifying the other. Music AI, developed in 2019 by Brazilian entrepreneurs Geraldo Ramos, Eddie Hsu, and Jardson Almeida, is an example of this synergy. From its beginnings as a consumer app to help artists practise and create, the firm has developed into a global leader in AI-powered music and audio solutions. This transformation took a huge step ahead with the announcement of a $40 million Series A fundraising round, indicating a commitment to further reshaping the creative landscape for musicians, producers, and creators globally.

Music AI’s journey began with a vision of empowering creators through new technology that complements, rather than replaces, natural creativity. Moises, the company’s flagship B2C product, demonstrates its objective. Moises, which began as a tool for musicians, has grown to over 50 million users worldwide and was named Apple’s iPad App of the Year in 2024. Its features, such as stem separation, voice transmission, and mixing tools, have made it popular among both enthusiasts and pros.

But what actually distinguishes Music AI is its dedication to ethical AI research. Unlike some AI companies facing legal battles for copyright infringement, Music AI ensures that its models are only trained on licensed content.

The Investment and Its Purpose

The $40 million Series A round was headed by Connect Ventures, a joint venture of NEA and Creative Artists Agency (CAA), and Monashees, a Brazilian venture capital firm that earlier invested in Music AI’s seed round. Other significant participants include Kickstart, Samsung Next, Toba Capital, Valutia, Pelion Venture Partners, Mindset Ventures, and various music industry heavyweights like Steve Aoki (Aoki Labs), Freddy Wexler, 3LAU, and Alexander23.

Michael Blank, managing partner at Connect Ventures, highlighted the significance of Music AI’s approach: “Music AI’s talent-friendly approach and unparalleled technology are helping them become the trusted and premier AI platform of the music industry. Beyond empowering artists, Moises enhances the creative process for musicians, producers, and content creators worldwide for practice, creation, and collaboration.”

This funding will expand Music AI’s product offerings, accelerate research into assistive and generative AI technologies, and further develop its AI models for both B2C and B2B applications. Samsung Next investor Carlos Castellanos praised the company’s ability to embed AI models directly into hardware: “Their proprietary technology ensures faster performance, enhanced privacy, and reduced cloud dependency, making them a leader in embedded AI solutions for devices like smartphones and smart TVs.”

From Consumer App to Global Platform

The company’s journey began with Moises, a consumer app that allows users to practice, create, and collaborate on music. However, Music AI has since evolved into a comprehensive platform serving both B2C and B2B markets. The company processes more than 2.5 million minutes of audio daily through its infrastructure, which includes over 50 proprietary AI models accessible via cloud APIs and embedded SDKs.

Monashees co-founder and Managing Partner Eric Acher highlighted the company’s broader vision:

“Latin America is a hub of creativity, and we’re proud to support founders building a global company at the forefront of AI innovation.”

This evolution has positioned Music AI to meet the growing demand for AI-powered audio technologies. For enterprise clients, Music AI offers a one-stop solution for combining proprietary and third-party AI models to prototype and scale innovative products. As CEO Geraldo Ramos noted:

“Our models are individually capable unto themselves, but we’ve built a one-stop hub with the ability to combine our various modules with those of third parties to create the powerful solutions demanded by top-tier clients. The market for AI-powered music and audio applications is maturing away from point solutions in favor of broader, more capable, scalable solutions like Music AI.”

A Platform That Scales Creativity

Behind the scenes, Music AI operates at an extraordinary scale. Its proprietary AI models process over 1.2 million minutes of audio daily, serving 1,700 applications and millions of users. The platform offers a suite of tools via cloud APIs and embedded SDKs, allowing developers and enterprises to integrate Music AI’s capabilities seamlessly.
Beyond its core offerings for musicians and producers, Music AI has begun exploring applications in adjacent industries. The company recently collaborated with Papa John to localize TV commercials, adapting Hispanic translations featuring Shaquille O’Neal using its voice modeling technology. Additionally, Music AI partnered with HYPERREAL® to generate synthesized speech and singing for virtual avatars.

Its AI restoration capabilities have also gained attention. Music AI’s technology was used in the production of Elis and Tom, a documentary about legendary Bossa Nova artists Elis Regina and Antônio Carlos Jobim. The company’s source separation models restored original 1972 studio recordings, enabling the film to premiere in the U.S. this past September. Samsung Next, another key investor, sees potential in Music AI’s on-device AI capabilities. Carlos Castellanos, an investor at Samsung Next, said:

“Their proprietary models, third-party integrations, and on-device AI capabilities ensure reliability, security, and scalability across smartphones, smart TVs, and other connected devices—all while elevating the end-user experience with cutting-edge features.”

Bridging Research and Application

One of Music AI’s key characteristics is its ability to bridge the gap between academic research and practical applications. The corporation frequently engages in academic activities that promote innovation and collaboration with scholars. “We believe that the synergy between scientific exploration and practical applications leads to faster advancements,” Ramos explained.

The company’s investment in data science talent ensures it remains at the forefront of AI development. Matt Henninger, Music AI’s VP of Business Development and Sales, noted: “Providing our platform to enterprise clients requires the highest quality, precision, and ethical standards. Serving a variety of client use cases has allowed us to create novel workflows that wouldn’t be available from any single vendor.”

Music AI’s leadership team and investors are optimistic about what lies ahead. Ramos concluded: “This investment reflects the real-world impact of our technology. We’re excited to push the boundaries of AI in music and deliver tools that empower creators everywhere.”
