Since its founding in 1999, Salesforce, a pioneer in customer relationship management (CRM) worldwide, has led the way in digital transformation. Salesforce was once an advanced cloud-based CRM solution created by Marc Benioff, Parker Harris, Frank Dominguez, and Dave Moellenhoff with the goal of revolutionising how companies manage customer interactions and data. Salesforce’s foray into artificial intelligence (AI) dates back to 2014, when the business acquired RelateIQ, a machine learning and data automation specialist. Through this calculated action, Salesforce’s ecosystem gained access to AI capabilities, opening the door for further advancements. During the Dreamforce conference in 2016, Salesforce unveiled Einstein, their inaugural AI product. By incorporating machine learning and predictive analytics into Salesforce’s CRM, the renowned scientist Einstein sought to democratise artificial intelligence (AI) and make it usable for companies of all sizes. This allowed users to make data-driven choices and obtain deeper insights.

The launch of generative AI technology marked a significant milestone in Salesforce’s AI progress. The promise of generative AI was demonstrated by OpenAI’s introduction of ChatGPT in 2022, which led Salesforce to include comparable features in its products. Large language models (LLMs) were created as a result, and in 2023 Einstein GPT was introduced. The company’s AI research team, led by notable individuals like Silvio Savarese and Richard Socher, has been instrumental in expanding AI applications, from generative models to predictive analytics. Innovative technologies like CodeGen, which converts natural language prompts into executable code, and ProGen, which employs artificial intelligence (AI) to manufacture functional proteins for medicinal purposes, are the product of these efforts.

Why Salesforce is Investing Heavily in AI and Data Science

According to a recent IDC white paper supported by Salesforce, there will be a significant increase in employment over the next year for positions such as data architects, AI ethicists, and AI solutions architects. Over the next six years, 11.6 million new jobs are expected to be created inside the Salesforce ecosystem alone. In response to the growing array of opportunities driven by artificial intelligence (AI), Salesforce Chief People Officer Nathalie Scardino reportedly said in a TOI report that the company is actively hiring for roles like prompt engineers, AI trainers, and ethical AI architects. 

Scardino emphasized, “AI is fuelling job creation.” While traditional roles adapt to changing landscapes, AI introduces a plethora of new, high-paying positions across various sectors, including Salesforce. “We’re hiring for jobs today that didn’t exist as recently as last year,” she noted. One such role is the ethical AI architect, tasked with scrutinizing AI systems for bias alongside product teams. To meet this demand, Salesforce has revamped its hiring process, focusing on skills and core competencies. Leveraging AI and automation streamlines talent acquisition, ensuring the right fit for each role amidst a deluge of over 2 million yearly applicants.

Salesforce’s push into AI and data science is driven by several key factors:

Enhancing Customer Relationships: Salesforce, a pioneer in customer relationship management, has unveiled Einstein Copilot, a generative AI solution intended to improve client relationships via tailored and effective communication. Einstein Copilot, which is integrated with Salesforce apps, uses metadata and data from a company to generate insightful consumer suggestions without the need for expensive AI model training. The objectives of this AI assistant are to boost productivity, expand client connections, and boost profit margins for companies. 

Marc Benioff, Chair & CEO of Salesforce, emphasized, “AI is the single most important moment in the history of our industry. It will deepen customer relationships, increase productivity and drive higher margins at every company”

Boosting Productivity: Salesforce’s AI technologies, especially Einstein, automate repetitive operations and provide insights that may be used to improve productivity. Eighty percent of workers utilising AI report increased productivity, proving this assertion. Automation of processes like data entry and lead routing, which frees up staff for high-impact work, is a crucial component. For instance, manual work decreased by 75% at Kendo Brands. Additionally, Einstein provides predictive insights that aid sales teams in efficiently prioritising prospects. Personalisation of marketing efforts and customer care also results in increased engagement and loyalty. Chatbots and virtual agents using artificial intelligence (AI) improve customer service by answering common questions and giving priority to urgent problems.

Driving Innovation: Under CEO Clara Shih, Salesforce integrates AI across its entire product suite, including Sales Cloud, Service Cloud, Marketing Cloud, Commerce Cloud, Industry Clouds, Mulesoft, Tableau, and Slack. Shih leads product development and ecosystem expansion for Einstein GPT, the top AI for CRM, delivering over 1 trillion predictions weekly. Salesforce’s 1,500+ AI experts develop proprietary models and techniques like prompt engineering. An open ecosystem approach lets customers choose or bring their own AI models. The Office of Ethical and Humane Use of Technology ensures responsible AI development. Salesforce leverages AI for personalized customer insights, driving data-driven decisions and continuous innovation. Clara Shih, CEO of Salesforce AI, highlighted the transformative potential of AI, stating, “We’re witnessing a pivotal moment – a step function in human potential” .

Economic Impact: Salesforce is leading the way in artificial intelligence (AI), which has the potential to significantly boost economic development. AI-powered cloud solutions are expected to provide $948 billion in new revenue by 2028, doubling from $312 billion in 2022, according to an IDC analysis commissioned by Salesforce. This illustrates how quickly AI is being incorporated into commercial operations, which might result in a $2.02 trillion net benefit between 2022 and 2028. A net rise of nearly 11 million employment across many industries is also predicted by the analysis as a result of AI-powered solutions. AI increases efficiency by helping with data-driven decision-making, automating repetitive operations, and delivering insightful information. AI enhances patient outcomes and diagnostic accuracy in healthcare; it lowers costs in transportation with autonomous fleets; it democratises financial planning in finance with robo-advisors; and it allows personalised, on-demand production in retail and manufacturing.

Responsible Machine Learning Data Science Engineer: Focuses on developing ethical AI models and ensuring they align with Salesforce’s guidelines.

Lead Data Scientist – Marketing Attribution Model: Specializes in creating models to measure marketing effectiveness.

Senior AI/ML Engineer: Works on developing and deploying machine learning models.

Lead ML Engineer – AI Cloud: Collaborates with cross-functional teams to build AI platform services.

AI Trainer and Prompt Engineers: These roles involve refining AI responses and crafting prompts to ensure accuracy.

A recent search on LinkedIn and other job sites reveals numerous openings at Salesforce for roles related to generative AI and data science. For instance, positions such as Product Manager, Salesforce Developer, Account Executive, and AI Consultant are available, reflecting the company’s broad and deep investment in AI talent.
