Claimable Uses AI to Help Patients Beat Insurance Denials and Reclaim Their Healthcare

Claimable’s AI-driven approach is a game changer for patients who have been unfairly denied care. It gives them a fighting chance to overturn these decisions and get the right coverage for the right treatment.

The U.S. healthcare system is fraught with challenges, particularly for patients denied access to essential treatments. In a landscape where 850 million claims are denied annually, leaving 1 in 5 Americans grappling with devastating delays, financial strain, and worsened health outcomes, Claimable is emerging as a beacon of hope. By leveraging advanced AI technology, Claimable is redefining how patients challenge unjust insurance denials and reclaim control over their care.

The idea for Claimable emerged when co-founder and CEO Warris Bokhari, a physician-executive with experience at Amazon, Apple, and Anthem (now Elevance Health), witnessed the devastating effects of claim denials firsthand. Having been raised by two disabled parents and having practiced medicine in the UK—where patients are never denied care—Bokhari deeply understood the importance of accessible healthcare. After working in the insurance industry, he saw that claim denial was a core issue in American healthcare, one that often goes unchallenged because the appeals process is too complex and exhausting for most patients.

“It’s no wonder why people give up,” Bokhari said. “If you’re a rational person, you would say this model was not fit for purpose.” This realization fueled the creation of Claimable—an AI-powered platform designed to fight back against unjust denials and simplify the appeals process for patients.

Bokhari teamed up with co-founders Alicia and Zach, who share his passion for fixing real problems in healthcare. Zach, driven by his experience improving care for veterans at the VA, believes access to care is as critical as the care itself. Alicia, the child of a nurse, became relentlessly curious about reimagining healthcare experiences and fixing them from the ground up. Together, they created Claimable to level the playing field, giving patients a voice in a system that too often drowns them out.

Claimable’s mission is clear: ensuring everyone gets the care they need and the coverage they deserve.

“Our mission is to level the playing field, ensuring every patient can reclaim control over their healthcare and get the treatment they’re owed,” says Bokhari.

Turning Denials into Wins

At the heart of Claimable’s platform lies its AI-powered appeals engine—a purpose-built solution that transforms how patients navigate claim denials. Unlike generic tools or form letters, Claimable delivers personalized, evidence-based appeals in a matter of minutes. The platform analyzes an individual’s medical story alongside clinical guidelines, policy details, and appeal precedents to create a compelling, legally sound case.

Here’s how Claimable makes the process seamless and powerful:

  1. AI-Driven Research and Strategy The platform’s advanced algorithms scour millions of clinical studies, legal frameworks, and successful appeals to build a strategy tailored to each patient’s case. Claimable’s AI recognizes patterns from previous wins, ensuring each new appeal leverages the strongest evidence and arguments.
  2. Personalized, Professional Appeals Claimable’s AI doesn’t just generate arguments; it crafts empathetic, articulate appeals that resonate with decision-makers. Each document blends clinical evidence, personal impact, and policy compliance to create a persuasive narrative.
  3. Automated Delivery and Tracking Once finalized, Claimable submits appeals directly to insurers via fax and First Class Mail, complete with tracking. The platform even requests urgent 72-hour reviews where applicable, speeding up responses that often take weeks.
  4. Built-In Expertise and Support Patients don’t need to know how to word a prompt, decode policies, or catch mistakes. Claimable’s AI functions as an expert assistant, reviewer, and strategist. If additional oversight is required, human specialists step in to provide extra assurance and support.

“Using Claimable is like having your very own team of AI-powered researchers, writers, and editors,” explains Zach, Chief AI Officer. With nearly 15 years of experience as a Chief Data Scientist at the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs, Zach understands the complexities of healthcare denial appeals. “This is the incredible power of AI and how it gives you superhuman appeals powers, with just the click of a button.”

The Numbers Speak for Themselves

The results of Claimable’s pilot program paint a striking picture of its effectiveness:

  • An 80% success rate for appeals, 1.6x higher than the industry average.
  • Cases resolved three times faster, with decisions returned in under 10 days.
  • Over $3 million recovered for patients.

These statistics highlight the platform’s potential to alleviate the immense burden of unjust denials. For millions of patients facing delays in care, Claimable offers more than hope—it delivers results.

Claimable’s work goes beyond generic insurance battles. The company recently stepped up to help families of children with PANS/PANDAS, a rare brain disorder that causes sudden-onset psychiatric symptoms. IVIG, the primary treatment for this condition, costs over $9,000 per infusion out of pocket—an impossible burden for most families. In one case, the Coulter family faced three denials from Cigna as their daughter’s condition deteriorated. Claimable intervened and filed a customized appeal. Within 96 hours, the denial was overturned, and the family was reimbursed for their expenses.

This success inspired Claimable to launch a free appeals program for all PANS/PANDAS families nationwide.

“I spoke to 12 families across 12 different states in the span of two days, and their stories were heartbreaking,” recalls Bokhari. “Divorces, foreclosures, bankruptcy—all to get access to one treatment and give their kids a shot. There was no way we could sit this out.”

Now, families battling PANS/PANDAS can file appeals at no cost, ensuring children get access to the care they desperately need.

Why Most Denials Go Unchallenged

Healthcare claim denials are pervasive, yet only a fraction of patients fight back. According to a 2023 KFF report, insurers denied 17% of in-network claims in 2021, but less than 0.2% of patients filed appeals. The reasons are clear: the process is time-consuming, opaque, and designed to exhaust the average person’s ability to fight back.

Warris Bokhari describes this as the start of a hidden public health crisis. “What happens to the rest of those claims? They go unchallenged. So patients end up abandoning care,” he says. Claimable’s platform makes appeals fast, accessible, and achievable, ensuring more patients push back against unjust denials.

Unlike lawyers or professional advocates, whose services can cost thousands, Claimable offers an affordable solution. Appeals are priced at $39.95 per case, plus shipping, making it accessible to patients from all walks of life. By prioritizing affordability, Claimable ensures that financial constraints don’t prevent patients from pursuing the care they deserve.

Currently, Claimable supports appeals for over 70 life-changing treatments, with a focus on autoimmune and migraine medications. By 2025, the company plans to expand its offerings to include over 100 treatments, addressing conditions like Multiple Sclerosis, Cardiac Diseases, Diabetes, Asthma, and certain cancers. This growth will allow Claimable to impact even more lives nationwide.

Secure, Reliable, and HIPAA-Compliant

Claimable’s technology isn’t just effective; it’s built with security and privacy at its core. Every piece of patient data is handled in strict adherence to HIPAA regulations, ensuring the highest level of confidentiality and protection. From encrypted storage to controlled access, Claimable prioritizes patient safety while delivering unmatched results.

“Claimable offers a critical remedy. This platform is a lifeline for those caught in the machinery of an industry that too often prioritizes dollars over lives,” says Wendell Potter, a former insurance executive and healthcare reform expert.

With a bold mission and proven success, Claimable is poised to reshape how Americans fight insurance denials. From empowering patients to holding insurers accountable, Claimable represents a much-needed shift toward fairness and access in healthcare.

The future looks promising. By blending advanced technology, medical expertise, and a deep understanding of the appeals process, Claimable is giving patients a fighting chance to reclaim their health.

As insurers use AI to streamline denials, Claimable is flipping the script, using AI to advocate for patients. In the words of Practice Manager Julie Baak, “Claimable’s AI-driven approach is a game changer for patients who have been unfairly denied care. It gives them a fighting chance to overturn these decisions and get the right coverage for the right treatment.”
