Modern Animal today announced the release of a first set of AI-powered advancements to its proprietary medical software, Claude. These enhancements, which are intended to ease the administrative responsibilities that veterinary practitioners face, seek to improve the quality of service for the almost 60,000 pets and their families that rely on the pioneering veterinary health network for treatment.
The company shared a post saying, “Since day one, Modern Animal has bet that technology would be fundamental to evolving the experience of veterinary practitioners and pet owners—first to meet today’s standards and then to shape the future of veterinary care.
Overtime, we’ve doubled down on this bet by creating an all-in-one member app, advocating for broader access to telemedicine, and building our own practice management system, Claude, from scratch. Today, we’re excited to introduce the next phase of our technology roadmap: ✨ AI-Assisted Tools for Veterinarians.”
With almost 23 million people acquiring pets in the first year of the pandemic, the increase in pet health issues, along with staffing constraints, has pushed veterinary burnout to an all-time high. To address these challenges, Modern Animal has implemented these additional features throughout its 20-clinic network in California and Texas. The first round of upgrades uses Generative AI to automate vital but time-consuming administrative activities that can take up over half of a doctor’s day.
The three specific functions enhanced by AI in this initial release are:
Patient Overview: Quickly brings doctors up to speed before appointments by instantly synthesizing the patient’s entire medical history into one convenient snapshot.
Visit Summarization: Enhances the connection between care providers and pet owners by interpreting notes taken during an appointment into an auto-generated, client-friendly summary. This summary is reviewed by the doctor before being shared with their client in the Modern Animal app.
Interpretation and Summarization of Lab Work: Auto-generates a preliminary analysis of diagnostic results for review by the doctor and instantly interprets approved findings into client-friendly summaries shared in the Modern Animal app.
These features were created through a unique partnership between Modern Animal’s technology team and approximately 40 members of the clinical team. Clinicians who choose to engage in this cooperation beta-tested the features, offered input, and took part in “shadowing” sessions, in which members of the technology team observed practitioners throughout the day, answered questions, and highlighted real-time potential for innovation.
Dr. Christie Long, Chief Medical Officer at Modern Animal and an advocate for technology in veterinary medicine, highlighted the potential impact of these new features. “With AI streamlining tasks like records review, lab result interpretation, and post-visit summary generation, our veterinarians can now dedicate more time to what truly matters: caring for pets and their families,” says Dr. Long. “This newfound efficiency enables veterinarians to deliver care they feel proud of while also enhancing clinic productivity and, most importantly, their own quality of life.”
According to Dr. Long, the first set of features developed through this partnership has the potential to save doctors up to two hours every day. This time savings results in more tolerable working hours, more collaborative and trustworthy relationships between doctors and pet owners, and begins to address the causes of burnout that have grown common in the veterinary industry.
Steven Eidelman, Founder and CEO of Modern Animal, discussed the future of AI in their operations. “The early investment we made to build our technology platform from scratch has uniquely positioned us to rapidly iterate and learn about AI’s potential on our own terms,” said Eidelman. “While so far we’ve used this advantage to augment our team’s administrative efficiency, we have started to envision a world where AI becomes a reliable collaborator that increases confidence in medical decisions for doctors at all levels. I look forward to the continued impact of this important work on our network of practitioners and beyond.”
With this initial rollout proving AI’s capacity to reduce administrative burdens, Modern Animal plans to develop a more comprehensive suite of features to support doctors in practicing great medicine. Claude by Modern Animal, a proprietary medical software, has been upgraded with AI-assisted features to manage more administrative tasks for veterinary practitioners. By leveraging AI to simplify essential yet time-consuming tasks, these enhancements allow veterinarians to focus more on animal and client care. Since 2022, Modern Animal has been partnering with veterinary teams to build a smarter veterinary experience for both care providers and pet owners.
