“911, what’s your emergency?” In critical moments when first responders face delays, help might arrive from above, buzzing through the sky. That sound often comes from a high-tech drone built by Brinc Drones, a U.S.-based company using AI-powered drones to reach danger zones faster, assess situations in real time, and even communicate with people in need before human help arrives.
Founded in response to the tragic 2017 Las Vegas shooting, the startup is committed to deploying drones and other technologies that benefit the community and help save lives. Leveraging technology to de-escalate dangerous situations, their mission is to revolutionize public safety. By deploying drones to dangerous situations, they reduce the number of individuals in harm’s way, potentially saving lives.
Kid Genius to Drone CEO
Blake Resnick, a young founder driven by a lifelong passion for science and technology, embarked on a mission to change the world with his innovation at the age of 21. His journey began at a young age, taking apart and rebuilding household appliances, and culminated in the construction of a fusion reactor in his garage at the age of 14.
Recently, his brainchild secured $75 million in funding. Index Ventures led the financing, continuing their support of BRINC after participating in two previous funding rounds. Motorola Solutions also invested, forming a strategic alliance with BRINC. Additional backers included Mike Volpi and Figma’s CEO and founder, Dylan Field.
Previously, the company secured $55 million in Series B in 2022 and was valued at $300 million in 2023, according to a Bloomberg report.
This new alliance between BRINC and Motorola Solutions introduces a new age of automated emergency response by combining BRINC drones with Motorola Solutions’ suite of public safety technologies, including APX radios, VESTA 911 emergency call management software, Computer-Aided Dispatch systems, Real-Time Crime Center Software (CommandCentral Aware), and Automatic License Plate Recognition technology.
Motorola Solutions’ public safety solutions now receive real-time aerial intelligence directly from BRINC drones, which can be deployed at the push of a radio button and respond to new sensor alerts thanks to these integrations.
No GPS? No Problem
BRINC builds specialized indoor tactical drones designed to help law enforcement and emergency teams in active scenarios. Unlike standard drones, Brinc models are designed to operate in GPS-denied environments like tunnels, buildings, or underground spaces. They come equipped with two-way communication systems, allowing real-time conversations between first responders and people in distress. In situations where time is critical, these drones can even break glass to enter buildings, helping authorities assess the scene and act faster.
The Lemur 2, their flagship drone, is a tactical drone designed to minimize the need for human officers to enter dangerous situations by supporting de-escalation efforts. This specialized drone integrates artificial intelligence and machine learning into the core of its technology, autonomously navigating complex indoor environments. AI-powered computer vision helps these drones recognize doors, windows, and obstructions, giving teams on the ground detailed visual intelligence in real time. With machine learning models analyzing the environment, operators receive tactical insights such as room layouts, movement detection, and potential threats.
BRINC drones have several optimal features, including an integrated two-way communications system that allows the drone to function as a flying phone for negotiators. This reduces human risk and avoids physical confrontations. Additionally, during urban search and rescue operations, BRINC technology allows operators to assess dangerous locations without sending a human into the area.
The Future of First Response
This new funding will allow BRINC to expand its workforce, further scale its production to meet the rising demand from public safety agencies, and invest in research and development for future drone technology. As founder and CEO Resnick stated, “We will continue building world-class emergency response drones and scale our team to meet the growing demand for our life-saving technologies.”
Currently, over 400 public safety agencies around the world utilize BRINC products to establish contact without using force, thereby saving lives.
